ATScience 2026

Fri, Mar 27, 2026 at 3:30 PM - Sat, Mar 28, 2026

Join us for a full-day of scientific explorations on the AT Protocol. Taking place as a side event to ATmosphereConf 2026 (March 26-29, 2026), this gathering will bring together researchers, developers, and builders who are using ATProto for science, education, and open knowledge work. The event will feature presentations, panel discussions, project demos and an unconference. From academic researchers using Bluesky in innovative ways to new infrastructure for collaborative research and credentialing, we’ll explore how ATProto can support transformative new science applications. Join us in Vancouver, BC, Canada at the AMS Student Nest building.

With #ATScience, it turns out the hype was the floor, not the ceiling. I got so much more out of both it and the #AtmosphereConf that I wish I had scheduled more time for it.

This is worth reading up on so perhaps you can join us at the next one!

New grant awarded to the Nanopublications project to build a federated graph of scientific claims with #Fediverse integrations! Great to see similar patterns playing out across open social protocols - bridging informal discourse on social media with more formal science publishing methods #ATScience

It was a joy to chat with Ronen, get some insight into the direction Cosmik and co are going, and explore all the shared vision we have (which only seemed to increase as we went!). Also inspired some exciting concepts for the future of participatory research (including with @atproto.science!)
Ronen Tamari @ronentk.me
Great conversation today with @luxaritas.com ! So cool to learn more about games for participatory science, feels like we are barely scratching the surface of the potential in research gamification.
I learned about the Eterna project where video gamers became core contributors and authors on papers

A historic black-and-white photograph with a green tint showing the Sydney Harbour Bridge under construction, with two incomplete arches reaching toward each other from opposite shores. Overlaid on the image are several logos and text boxes: a white box on the left reading "Cutting edge publishing tools," the Curvenote logo (blue icon with the word "Curvenote") in the center-left, the Semble logo (orange stacked circles above the word "semble" in orange) in the center-right, and a white box on the right reading "ATScience."

So so excited about this and some of the opportunities to connect this into the #ATScience ecosystem.

Shipped some small hints of that last week with
@ronentk.me for (lite, v1) @semble.so integration.
I'm going to be exploring integration as a theory-of-change with @semble.so! Augmenting existing knowledge tools like Zotero, Obsidian, etc. with the collective sense-making happening on Semble. If this is something you would find helpful I would love to hear more about what you're looking for 😄
A screenshot of Zotero with the Zemble plugin enabled. The plugin addition columns for each item that has been saved, added to collections, and connections in Semble.
𝕼 @chrisshank.com
There are two theories-of-change emerging: displace vs. integrate

They are by no means mutually exclusive, but much more effort has gone into spinning up brand new atproto apps with the goal to displace existing apps than has gone into embedding the protocol into every nook and cranny of the web.
#ATProtoScience tools can enable sensemaking and maybe some nerdy jobs in the near future:

"Similar to how social media made influencers... maybe there'll be influencers [as scholarly] sensemakers... [attendee: high need for cognition people]..."

Yep, that's my dream job,
@ronentk.me
Just addition evidence that there is a solid foundation here to build out #ATScience @atproto.science
Er-Te Zheng @ertezheng.bsky.social
In our new paper of how Bluesky users discuss retracted papers, we found:
✅ 90% of Bluesky posts show "good practices" (flagging issues/retraction status)
❌ Only 10% show "bad practices"
This highlights Bluesky's vital role in responsible science communication!

As young scientist you will have to choose:

#Academia? Face the <5% tenure probability, fight for grants and prestige over papers publication.
#Industry? Please your hierarchy and stakeholders, but for substantial reward.

I choose the hard path to
#RethinkScience.

And you what will you do?
The penguin meme image with the colony replaced by Academia, the feeding ground replaced by Industry, and finally the mountains replaced by Revolutionize Science.
For non-Finnish speakers -
"Bluesky has reportedly become the social network for science and research."
We would add - the broader Atmosphere, not just Bluesky :)
Either way - LFG

Medsky Network @medsky.network
Medsky will soon be offering accounts the ability to migrate to a separate service that is run through @blackskyweb.xyz's Acorn service.

You'll still be able to log in to Bluesky with a .medsky.network account, but you'll also be able to log in to platform specifically built for healthcare workers.
